Argentina JUST PASSED a groundbreaking gender identity bill!!!

From now on, people will be able to change the name and gender on their ID without needing psychiatric permission or any body modifications. Furthermore, anyone who does want hormones or surgery will be able to access them for free through the public and private health system.

It was passed unanimously today by the Senate :-D

knowhomo:

Trans* Umbrella

Following terms from GLAAD

TRANSGENDER-SPECIFIC TERMINOLOGY

Transgender An umbrella term (adj.) for people whose gender identity and/or gender expression differs from the sex they were assigned at birth. The term may include but is not limited to: transsexuals, cross-dressers and other gender-variant people. Transgender people may identify as female-to-male (FTM) or male-to-female (MTF). Use the descriptive term (transgender, transsexual, cross-dresser, FTM or MTF) preferred by the individual. Transgender people may or may not decide to alter their bodies hormonally and/or surgically.

Transsexual (also Transexual) An older term which originated in the medical and psychological communities. While some transsexual people still prefer to use the term to describe themselves, many transgender people prefer the term transgender to transsexual. Unlike transgender, transsexual is not an umbrella term, as many transgender people do not identify as transsexual. It is best to ask which term an individual prefers.

Transvestite Derogatory see Cross-Dressing

Transition Altering one’s birth sex is not a one-step process; it is a complex process that occurs over a long period of time. Transition includes some or all of the following personal, legal and medical adjustments: telling one’s family, friends and/or co-workers; changing one’s name and/or sex on legal documents; hormone therapy; and possibly (though not always) one or more forms of surgery.

Sex Reassignment Surgery (SRS) Refers to surgical alteration, and is only one small part of transition (see Transition above). Preferred term to “sex change operation.” Not all transgender people choose to or can afford to have SRS. Journalists should avoid overemphasizing the role of SRS in the transition process.

Cross-Dressing To occasionally wear clothes traditionally associated with people of the other sex. Cross-dressers are usually comfortable with the sex they were assigned at birth and do not wish to change it. “Cross-dresser” should NOT be used to describe someone who has transitioned to live full-time as the other sex or who intends to do so in the future. Cross-dressing is a form of gender expression and is not necessarily tied to erotic activity. Cross-dressing is not indicative of sexual orientation.

Gender Identity Disorder (GID) A controversial DSM-IV diagnosis given to transgender and other gender- variant people. Because it labels people as “disordered,” Gender Identity Disorder is often considered offensive. The diagnosis is frequently given to children who don’t conform to expected gender norms in terms of dress, play or behavior. Such children are often subjected to intense psychotherapy, behavior modification and/or institutionalization. Replaces the outdated term “gender dysphoria.”

Intersex Describing a person whose biological sex is ambiguous. There are many genetic, hormonal or anatomical variations that make a person’s sex ambiguous (e.g., Klinefelter Syndrome). Parents and medical professionals usually assign intersex infants a sex and perform surgical operations to conform the infant’s body to that assignment. This practice has become increasingly controversial as intersex adults speak out against the practice. The term intersex is not interchangeable with or a synonym fortransgender.

TRANSGENDER TERMS TO AVOID

PROBLEMATIC TERMS

Problematic: “transgenders,” “a transgender”
Preferred: “transgender people,” “a transgender person”
Transgender should be used as an adjective, not as a noun. Do not say, “Tony is a transgender,” or “The parade included many transgenders.” Instead say, “Tony is a transgender man,” or “The parade included many transgender people.”

Problematic: “transgendered”
Preferred: “transgender”
The adjective transgender should never have an extraneous “-ed” tacked onto the end. An “-ed” suffix adds unnecessary length to the word and can cause tense confusion and grammatical errors. For example, it is grammatically incorrect to turn transgender into a participle, as it is an adjective, not a verb, and only verbs can be used as participles by adding an “-ed” suffix.

Problematic: “sex change,” “pre-operative,” “post-operative”
Preferred: “transition”
Referring to a sex change operation, or using terms such as pre- or post-operative, inaccurately suggests that one must have surgery in order to transition. Avoid overemphasizing surgery when discussing transgender people or the process of transition.

DEFAMATORY TERMS

Defamatory: “deceptive,” “fooling,” “pretending,” “posing” or “masquerading”
Gender identity is an integral part of a person’s identity. Do not characterize transgender people as “deceptive,” as “fooling” other people, or as “pretending” to be, “posing” or “masquerading” as a man or a woman. Such descriptions are defamatory and insulting.

Defamatory: “she-male,” “he-she,” “it,” “trannie,” “tranny,” “shim,” “gender-bender”
These words only serve to dehumanize transgender people and should not be used.

Defamatory: “bathroom bill”
A new term created and used by far-right extremists to oppose non-discrimination laws that protect transgender people. The term is geared to incite fear and panic at the thought of encountering transgender people in public restrooms. Use non-discrimination law/ordinance instead.

photograph from TG Rainbow Support Group

Note: some people prefer Sex Realignment Surgery, as you aren’t so much reassigning genitalia as aligning your genitalia with your gender identity.

Also, don’t use the word “trap”

There’s a movement to revamp the Violence Against Women Act to include greater protections for LGBT victims of sexual assault. As this blog post from the Washington Post points out, these modifications are direly needed.

Only 24 states use federal funding to support LGBT-specific anti-violence programs, but anti-gay violence is everywhere. This piece starts off with a chilling account of a violent relationship between two women, one of whom simply didn’t know where to turn when things were at their worst.

The rate of domestic violence among LGBT couples is about the same as for heterosexual ones — an estimated 25 to 33 percent experience abuse in their lifetimes, according to National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs. But LGBT victims are significantly less likely to seek out help: 45 percent of them have been turned away from domestic violence shelters, and only 7 percent call the police after an incident of domestic violence. LGBT women are particularly at risk: they’re victims of the majority of murders related to domestic violence in the gay community, the coalition says.

This actually does happen all the time, but it’s clearly underreported, and mainstream media outlets may be hesitant to cover it. This article points out why the suggestions to the Violence Against Women Act are needed right now, especially as the world slowly tilts left on gay rights.

Give this story a read. It’s a little-heard perspective on an important issue.

tuckthis:

did you know you can’t “POP your cherry”? In this video i talk about:

what the hymen really is
how this myth is some sexist bullshit
and how to deal with your hymen the 1st time you have sex.

The only reason I knew this is because of the sex talk with my Mom I had about six months ago. It’s awful how many women don’t know this about their own bodies.

ryface:

Years ago, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were the face of the celebrity-endorsed gay rights movement because they said they would not get married until LGBT people could get married too.

Six years and six kids later, Brad and Angelina have confirmed that they’re engaged, and according to reactions from this article in The Advocate, most gay rights activists are fine with it.

“Marriage is something that says ‘we’re a family’ in a way that nothing else can,” Rebekah Orr, communications director for EQFL, told TMZ. “No one has to deny that for themselves or their family to prove they are an ally and supporter of equality.”

From a more national perspective, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation offered a similar reaction.

“We congratulate them on their engagement and thank them for continuing to speak out about the inequality that so many gay and lesbian couples face today,” GLAAD spokesman Rich Ferraro told the Los Angeles Times. “No loving and committed couple should be denied the happiness, joy, and legal protections that come with marriage.”

My personal opinion is that they’re doing the right thing. As stoic as it is, holding off on marriage doesn’t actually change anything; rather, it sends the message that marriage isn’t so important and it can wait, which counters the main idea of the marriage equality movement. But what say you?

Study finds women more affected by staying closeted than men

Study finds women more affected by staying closeted than men:
gaywrites:

Researchers at Boston University have released a new study that explores different facts related to individuals living lives out of the closet.

Some of the “findings” are incredibly common sense: for example, people whose parents are supportive of them coming out in their 20s live healthier lives, and people with supportive parents are less likely to experience mental health problems or substance abuse.

However, one interesting finding shows that women are more strongly affected by remaining in the closet than men. From The Advocate:

“It’s possible that the stress of not disclosing your sexuality to your parents affects men and women differently,” said lead researcher Emily Rothman in an announcement of the findings. “In general, gay and bisexual men may be able to conduct their sexual lives apart from their parents with less stress.”

Thoughts? Fair/accurate observation?

People are butts about gender sometimes! So here is a comic talking about how it really isn’t a big deal!

When I was with James this week I wrote a little poem about gender
and decided to draw a comic for said poem.

Hope you guys enjoy!
